Gladioli Flower

The tender, large-flowered gladioli are relatively recent hybrids. Although the southern European species, such as G. communis, have been grown since the 17th century, it was not until the end of the 19th century that the modern day gladiolus began to take shape.

Much of the breeding programme, using colourful South African species, was carried out in Europe and America, and today's plants bear little relationship to their wild origins. As a result, gladioli are now available in virtually every colour and hue, with flowers ranging from 5-18cm (2-7in) wide. There is often a contrasting colour in the centre and the petals may be frilled or ruffled.

When choosing gladioli, make sure you distinguish between the tender (which can't be left in the ground over winter) and hardy kind (which can), and check their flowering times because some are early summer and some late. The hardy choice is relatively small and are readily available.
